Matthew Richardson knows how to raise some cash

According to a release from Matthew Richardson’s campaign, the Democratic nominee for Attorney General has raised over $350,000 since launching his campaign in late March and now has more than $325,000 cash on hand. That’s an impressive single quarter haul for any statewide candidate and a welcomed sign for S.C. Democrats looking for strong contenders to back this fall.
Richardson, a Columbia-based attorney with Wyche Burgess Freeman & Parham, will likely need every penny of that hefty warchest as he prepares to take on Republican Alan Wilson (son of U.S. Rep. Joe “You Lie” Wilson) in the coming weeks.
Though Wilson appears to have raised less money than Richardson — about $250,000 as of May — his bruising three-way primary forced him to go on the air early and build a strong network of grassroots supporters across the state. If Richardson hopes to rival Wilson’s built-in name ID and established grassroots organization by election day, he’ll need to fund an aggressive communications and GOTV effort to catch up quickly.
And, so far, it looks like he’s well on his way to making that happen.
