Taking Action in SC: Build a strong letter-writing group

( - promoted by Tim Kelly)

We all know the truth. The media isn't liberal. The mere glance at op-eds tell you that daily.

What we need to do is increase letters to the editors of local newspapers from a progressive standpoint.

In this last installment, I am going to briefly tell each and every one of you readers that we need to take our message to print media. It's really simple to do. It only takes research and the mere minutes to write/type one up.

I am providing a library of sorts for all the talking points for various issues you need. I usually update the site as well.

Just keep the letter under 200 words and you'll be fine. Address the issue, list facts, encourage others to research as well and end on a positive note. Leave the more liberal letters to those who have the experience in bashing untruths harshly.

If you write letters periodically, you gain reputation. You can use this with the editor to ask for guest columns from time to time - which give you more word usage to express your point of view.

If your shy about it, don't be. You have nothing to be afraid of for standing up for people who need a voice. The far right has their fear machine going. Where are those people to counter it?

I hope me offering this series encourages action. Its what we drastically need.

    Timing is Important (4.00 / 1)
With weekly papers, timing is important.  Find out when they put the newspaper together and make sure your letters get in a day or two before that.  If you letter arrives when the paper is "in production" it's probably too late to be printed that week and it will be stale a eight days later, when the next paper comes out.

The letters are usually one of the first parts of the paper to be laid out.  A short, snappy letter of current interest, delivered 24 to 48 hours prior to production has an excellent chance of being published.

Locally relevant facts, at least facts referencing SC, make for better letters.  You'll be competing for attention with reams of generalized, right wing paranoia, so be sharp and specific.

it was nice to see my LTE in The State (0.00 / 0)
right next to Bill O'Lielly's refuting most of his cr@p a while ago.

but i haven't written lately -- i guess it's time to get motivated, huh?
