Rep. Bob Inglis to Town Hall Hecklers: Turn Off Glenn Beck

    by: Jennifer Read

Fri Aug 07, 2009 at 08:45:35 AM EDT

U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) faced a 90-minute "verbal firing squad" from right-wingers intent on disrupting the Congressman's town hall meeting on health care Thursday night.

Speaking before a crowd of 350 at the Upstate Family Resource Center in Boiling Springs, SC last night, Inglis was met by shouts of "I'm afraid of Obama! He's got too much power!" and "Go home, Bob!" as he tried to answer questions from audience members.

An IJ reader sent us the YouTube video below of Inglis responding to the woman who cried out that she feared President Obama. In the clip, Rep. Inglis suggests that the woman and her friends should turn off Fox News' Glenn Beck and tune out the fear-mongering. Needless to say, the Congressman's advice did not go over well with the wing-nuts:

    Kudos, Rep. Inglis.

While I strongly disagree with Rep. Inglis' position on health care reform, I commend him for standing up to the right-wing hecklers and denouncing the myths and fear tactics some on the far right are using to whip people up into a frenzy over proposed reforms. It's heartening to see a Republican Congressman in such a blood-red district stand up to the extremists within his own party.

For a full run-down on last night's contentious town hall -- including a fantastic interview with Rep. Inglis explaining his views on Glenn Beck, health care reform, and his confidence in America's system of government -- check out Jason Spencer's blog post.

    Teabaggers, Birthers, and Secessionists (4.00 / 1)
Jason Spencer reported in his blog post that Rep. Inglis said, "What you saw tonight was people who had been convinced of this [Glenn Beck] negativism, and are detaching from the communities and institutions that hold us together."

Teabaggers think that paying taxes makes them slaves. Birthers think that they decide who is President. Secessionists think that states can join and unjoin the USA whenver they want.

Jason Spencer also reported in his blog post the Rep. Inglis said:

This is a constitutional republic that can withstand any president I disagree with. ...It withstood Bill Clinton. And if you were a George Bush-hater, it withstood George Bush. And it will withstand Barack Obama. And that's just because there's such confidence in the Constitution and the framers, who set up such an incredible system of checks and balances. ...It's inspiring to me to think about that.

Recall that when Abraham Lincoln was elected, South Carolina decided that our constitutional republic could not withstand Pres. Lincoln.  Jefferson "Don't blame me, I voted for Breckinridge" Davis led several southern states to form the Confederacy.

We've got to stand up to these people who think that the USA is their country but not ours.  Who think that South Carolina is their state but not ours.

"BTW...I am astounded at the ignorance and disrespect displayed from my community at the town hall meeting last night. Also, Inglis is having town hall meetings, recognizes that we all want to talk about health care/insurance reform and HASN'T READ THE BILL YET!!!!!! UGH!"

"oh yeah....and he said that when he finally did get down to reading the bill...he wasn't going to read the part about the public option b/c it would be a waste of his time since he already knows that he's going to vote no. It seems he's heard something (must be thru the rumor mill since he refuses to read that part) that the bill will fund abortions. Why should he find out for himself? Why is he bothering with town hall meetings? He's already decided to vote no. What the....?????"

So right after a bunch of people say they are afraid, they turn around and say they aren't afraid. Make up your mind, people.

This is why we have a republic instead of a democracy.

Revolution? These people just don't realize how good they've got it.

    Stacking the deck??? (0.00 / 0)
Former roomie who has been gone several years & voted/donated  Republican got a letter in the mail inviting them to Bob Inglis Town Hall in Piedmont, SC on Aug 17.  Owner of house and moi, both Dems got no invite?  Could they be stacking the deck?
