It's Official: Dwight Drake Is In

    by: Jennifer Read

Tue Aug 11, 2009 at 08:27:40 AM EDT

Following weeks of intense speculation, "stealth" Democratic candidate Dwight Drake finally unveiled his campaign for South Carolina governor today.

In a video message posted on his new campaign website, the Columbia lobbyist highlights his modest SC roots and touts his professional experience working on education initiatives in the Palmetto State, including his role in Casey Edwards' lawsuit to force Gov. Sanford to accept disputed federal stimulus funds.

The launch of Drake's campaign coincides nicely with the latest revelations that current Governor Mark Sanford misused state aircraft. In fact, the biographical video closes with Drake delivering a direct appeal to voters contrasting his experience and priorities in education and jobs with those of scandal-ridden Sanford, whom he accuses of being "AWOL" on job creation during his tenure.

Drake joins a crowded Democratic primary field which includes State Sen. Vincent Sheheen, Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod, State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex, and State Sen. Robert Ford.

Or is that logo a little odd with the missing crescent moon?

Yes, sadly, these are things I pay attention to.

    Governor's Race (0.00 / 0)
All these people have a perfect right to run for Governor, but the Democratic effort seems very top loaded at present.  We need strong down ballot candidates as well.

I suppose it's the high class air travel and women drawing the talent, or maybe it's the realization that the State's economy has begun to really slip as globalization takes hold and this may be the last election that really matters.

I do expect that unless we make real progress in 2010, the Republicans will own the process after reapportionment.  They'll then be free to explore their low wage, no tax plan for the future while most of the state fades and talent flees.

It is located in the word Journal...quite catchy.
I hope Mr Drake can put SC back on the right track.

    I was talking about Drake's logo (0.00 / 0)
    not IJ's.

    McLeod Responds (0.00 / 0)
Today, Columbia lobbyist Dwight Drake announced his candidacy for Governor of South Carolina as a Democrat. The following is a statement from Lachlan McIntosh, spokesperson for Mullins McLeod for Governor:

"We welcome Mr. Drake to the race - he is a smart and talented person.  But with all due respect, a corporate lobbyist won't change politics as usual in Columbia. Mullins McLeod has spent his life being a voice for people, not the special interests.  He's the only candidate who can bring the fresh perspective and change we need."

    Who is Dwight Drake? (0.00 / 0)
    Oh, here's the answer:

    And Sheheen chimes in (0.00 / 0)
Camden, SC - State Senator and Democratic candidate for governor Vincent Sheheen today issued the following statement regarding the Democratic primary for governor:

Which candidate can return trust to the governor's office?  That is the ultimate question that South Carolina voters must decide.

"In the South Carolina Senate, I have focused on fighting the special interests and insider politics that too often control our government in Columbia at the expense of the people. Whether it be predatory lenders, big tobacco companies, or environmental polluters, I have been willing to stand up to them - and stand up FOR hard-working South Carolinians and our families.

Next year, we have the opportunity to end business as usual and elect a new governor who will put the people of this state first.  South Carolinians deserve a state government that will reward their faith and hard work with good jobs and strong public schools.

Democrats in South Carolina must make a statement about the values of our party and of our state. The future of the Democratic Party and the quality of our state government in South Carolina is at stake.

In this election, Democrats must carefully choose a candidate who represents our values and the values of South Carolina.  We must make a new start, with a new direction and vision to rebuild our state. This is our chance and we cannot afford to miss it."

    Drake's candidacy (3.00 / 1)
I've been reading up on Drake's history because I don't want to be unfair. His having Harpootlian as his major supporter put me off, but Drake deserves to be judged on his own record. From what I've learned so far, I'm not favorably impressed. Drake has represented too many questionable interests. To the extent that he has been successful in that, South Carolina has suffered. There doesn't seem to be a great deal more to his record.

South Carolina politics too often seems to exist at the extremes  -- on one end of the spectrum ideologues who won't compromise even when compromise is needed for the greater good (for example, our governor) and, at the other end, those who have only a great dedication to staying in power (for example, much of our legislature). I'd like to see a governor who is pragmatic and works well with others, but whose goals are shaped by a principled idea of what South Carolina government should be and do. So far I don't see Drake in that role.
