Chad McGowan Gearing Up for U.S. Senate Run

    by: Jennifer Read

Tue Sep 29, 2009 at 10:20:58 AM EDT

Looks like South Carolina Democrats will have a viable U.S. Senate contender after all.

Rock Hill attorney Chad McGowan told the York County Democratic Party's Executive Committee last Tuesday that he plans to run for Republican Jim "Waterloo" DeMint's U.S. Senate seat in 2010.

Reportedly, McGowan plans to launch his campaign in early October and will take a year off from his job at McGowan, Hood & Felder to pursue the Democratic nomination.

At the moment, his campaign website is still under construction.

McGowan's entrance into the Senate race is a positive sign for S.C. Democrats. He's a successful litigator with the financial resources and time to mount a credible challenge to the incumbent, who's currently sitting atop a respectable $2.6 million war chest.

McGowan will face retired automotive executive Mike Ruckes in the Democratic primary.

Wow! Sure hope he gets some good consultants (0.00 / 0)
I'd love to talk to him sometime since he lives in the same county I do.  Looks like he has some funding available. There are still some good consultants out there waiting to find the right candidate.

A bit too conservative for me but that should serve him well in SC (0.00 / 0)
I talked with him and am impressed with him. He seems to understand that he's got to raise a great deal of money and publicity to be considered a viable candidate. It's an uphill battle but if we're ever going to win it'll be 2010.  LaurinLine used to predict that we'll be in the majority in 2016 (10 years behind the rest of the country).  This race may be a good one with which to start that noble goal.

    We get a Choice (0.00 / 0)
A primary certainly won't hurt the party here.  We'll have to get them to argue about something other than how bad DeMint is, a subject that's depth could devour both campaigns.  DeMint's not expected to have any Republican opposition.  Lindsey Graham's apparent contempt for our Junior Senator doesn't count.

We need a real Democrat to run against DeMint (0.00 / 0)
I was really disappointed in some of his interviews the other day.  He is trying too hard not to scare the crazy fundamentalists in the GOP.

It isn't worth my money, time, and effort to elect a pro-gun, anti-choice, anti-gay republican-lite.  He might even be more conservative than Lindsey Graham based on some of his comments.  It doesn't make any sense why he voted in the Republican Presidential Primary back in 2008, when Obama was in the fight of his life against Hillary.

I bet he'd wind up siding with the likes of Max Baucus and thwart the President when it came down to close votes.

I don't understand why we can't get a Phil Leventis or Gilda Cobb Hunter to run.

    The notion of a "real" Democrat (0.00 / 0)
Mr. McGowan is a real Democrat.  If he was really some kind of "secret Republican" like some of you hard-liners seem to think, in South Carolina he would run for some other office as a Republican, because that would be easier.  Running as a Democrat is no easy task.  I am not affiliated with his campaign, but I am aware of his long record of successfully advocating for those who have been railroaded by powerful interests.  He has been an effective advocate of the powerless and voiceless for a long time, and whether the Republicans want to call that an "ambulance chaser" I don't care.  He has expressed a belief that government can play a positive role in people's lives and has also expressed his desire to limit powerful interests' influence on the government.  The great thing about the Democratic Party is that this is what unites us:  a strong belief that government, while not the solution to EVERYTHING as the GOP often alleges, can do much to better the lives of the disadvantaged as well as the middle class.  The extent of government involvement in various areas (health care, guns, taxation, etc.) is what makes for some dissension amongst Democrats, but the Democratic Party stands against the anti-government "government is the problem" mentality across the aisle.  That sort of defeatist attitude creates the kind of problems you see here in South Carolina under absolute GOP rule.  We are also a more diverse party, which allows for innovative solutions to problems.  Since there is not just one kind of Democrat, we are more adaptive to problems than Republicans.  If we all act in lockstep, we are hardly prepared to deal with complexities and difficulty.  This is what makes it imperative that Democrats remain in office.  We can't afford knee-jerk lockstep GOP Congressmen and Senators.

    I should have said "proven" Democrat. (0.00 / 0)
If he had ever once voted in a Democratic primary, I would not have written my comment.  He was a registered Republican in North Carolina until 2005.  Then he moved 20 minutes south to Rock Hill and kept voting for Republicans.  He gives money to both parties and he has never run as a Democrat before.  Please excuse me if I am skeptical about his true loyalties.

You also can't judge him on the clients of his law firm.  He's represented the powerless, but he has also represented some powerful people and some pretty bad people.

I'll give him a chance and listen to his ideas when he presents them, but I still think we need another candidate like Sen. Leventis or Rep. Cobb-Hunter.

Here is what I am talking about (0.00 / 0)
In an interview with CNN, McGowan said the following "I think gun control is being able to hit what you're aiming at."

He then bragged about that being his favorite quote of the whole story via his Twitter account.

If all the best we can get out of the South Carolina Democratic Party is a buffoonish Blue Dog, then all we should expect is another electoral failure.

Inez tried to run as a Blue Dog against DeMint last time, and she lost by 10 points.  And this guy doesn't have nearly the stature or connections as Inez.

If the SCDP is going to make McGowan their candidate against DeMint, they can do it without wasting my money, time, and support.

    On Feeling Blue (0.00 / 0)
The Republicans make better conservatives than we do.  They enjoy bottom feeding on prejudice and fear.  They don't really feel guilty about it.

Our people know better and it shows when they try it.  You can't fake being conservative much better than you can fake being a progressive.

DeMint is having a toxic effect on the entire country.  He's a tool by which the teabagger right it taking over the entire Republican Party.  Some day the Republicans will probably take over and the consequences could be uncontrollable if there are no reasonable elements left within the Republican Party.

Look at the fantastic damage the Republicans did in six years with Bush, two wars, a financial collapse enabled, and large scale deindustrialization.  It will take the rest of our lives just to get back to where the country was in 2000.
