Tallying the Calls For Sanford's Resignation

    by: Tim Kelly

Wed Jul 01, 2009 at 10:22:29 AM EDT

The knives are increasingly out for the Undone Gov, and the calls for his resignation are coming fast and furious now. We'll use this thread to "keep score" as it were. If you see a legislator, newspaper or conservative talk show host throwing Sanford under the bus, post it in the comments here.

So far, here's what we have.

    Republican Senators:

Seven GOP senators issued a statement/letter last night that not only called on Sanford to quit, but also sounds as if it could have been written by me. Example: ""We must have strong leadership from a Governor who is focused and trusted. Governor Sanford is neither." Signees include:

    • Harvey S. Peeler
    • Hugh K. Leatherman
    • Thomas C. Alexander
    • Paul Campbell, Jr.
    • John M. "Jake" Knotts, Jr
    • Larry A. Martin
    • William H. O'Dell

In addition, Kevin Bryant and Larry Grooms are on record as wanting the Undone Gov's head. John Courson and Wes Hayes are said to be leaning that way.

    Democratic Senators:

While most are just chuckling silently - having realized Mark Sanford was a loon before it was cool - Sen. Vince Sheheen has publicly called for the Undone Gov's resignation.

    Republican House Members:

    • Lanny Littlejohn
    • Dennis Moss
    • Steve Moss
    • Eric Bedingfield
    • Greg Delleny
    • Carl Gullick

We're waiting to see if Joey Millwood will announce his decision on a mug.

    Democratic House Members:

We know Todd Rutherford has gone public, and Boyd Brown has called for a state grand jury, and we're waiting for more.

    Other Prominent GOPhers:

The biggest name is SC RNC member Glenn McCall, but two past executive directors of the state GOP, Jay Ragley and my old colleague Hogan Gidley, have also called for resignation.

    Daily Newspapers:

The State urged him to stay before yesterday's relevations, but six others have editorialized against the Undone Gov (with links to their editorials):

    Stay tuned.

    Updates:

(11 a.m.) - We can now add Wes Hayes and Shane Martin, and we have word that Danny Verdin is "on board" as well.

(2:30 p.m.) - Ronnie Cromer makes 13 GOP Senators (via Peter Hamby/CNN). Rep. Dan Hamilton also calls on Sanford to consider resigning.

(5:45 p.m.) - Sen. Pres. Pro Tem Glenn McConnell calls on Governor to "do the right thing" for the state and his family, bringing the GOP Senator count to 14. Sanford ally and 2010 Gov candidate Rep. Nikki Haley wants the Gov to layout his game plan for moving forward, saying she's "willing to listen to that case, but if he cannot make it convincingly, then he must move on.”

(11:30 p.m.) - Senators David Thomas and Phillip Shoopman are calling for the Gov to step down, along with Gresham Barrett.

Per the Spartanburg Herald-Journal Twitter feed, the two Spartanburg Dems Harold Mitchell and Glenn Reese are calling for resignation.

Also national conservative host Mike Gallagher called for resignation today--he used to be a local radio guy in Greenville and has been friendly with Sanford--gave the Sanford intro at the Greenville tea party back in April.

    RESOLUTION

Impeaching Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr., Governor of the State of South Carolina, for serious misconduct.

Resolved, That Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr., Governor of the State of South Carolina, is impeached for serious misconduct, and that the following articles of impeachment be exhibited to the South Carolina Senate.

Articles of impeachment exhibited by the South Carolina House of Representatives in the name of itself and the people of the State of South Carolina, against Mark Sanford, Governor of the State of South Carolina, in maintenance and support of its impeachment against him for serious misconduct.

    ARTICLE I

In his conduct while Governor of the State of South Carolina, Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr., in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of Governor of South Carolina and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the State of South Carolina, has misappropriated state funds in that:

    (1) On June 21 - 28, 2009, while on a taxpayer-financed trade mission to South America, Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr. diverted state monies and resources for the purpose of visiting his mistress in Argentina. Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr. deceived the people of the State of South Carolina in order to continue concealing his misconduct and to escape accountability for such misconduct.

The false and misleading statements made by Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr. to members of his staff members and aides were repeated by those staff members and aides, causing the people of the South Carolina to receive false and misleading information from high government officials.

In all of this, Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr. has undermined the integrity of his office, has brought disrepute on the Governorship, has betrayed his trust as Governor, and has acted in a negligent manner regarding his responsibilities and duties as the Chief Magistrate of South Carolina.

Wherefore, Marshall Clement Sanford, Jr., by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the State of South Carolina.

thestate.com was saying that a majority, 14 of 27, of the GOP Senators were calling for him to step down.

    But... (0.00 / 0)
We all know he's stubborn, and despite rumors swirling around the Statehouse, it doesn't look like he's going anywhere, yet. But, if Andre Bauer can change his mind so can Sanford.

I've heard SCGOP chairwoman Karen Floyd (who the party still refers to as chairman for autocratic reason) also called for/suggested Sanford to step down: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITI...

Going Old Testament on Sanford (0.00 / 0)
You know that the republican politicians in this state can't let anything go until it's destroyed. I think they feel they must go all Old Testament on even their own. I think that's why they continuously fall so short from the standards they set for themselves. At least I know God forgives and can rest assured that I live with God's Grace even though I fall short, maybe not as publicly as the unGov, but we all do. I don't know how I feel about his resignation. Either way as this all plays out we the citizens of SC can't win; we are still in deep crisis and need new leadership for this state. I hope the citizens realize we need the Democrats in charge or at least give us a chance.
