| Today a group of Democrats from Charleston and Dorchester Counties delivered copies of Dr. Howard Dean's Petition to make sure that the Health Care Reform bill includes a public option to the Charleston Offices of Senator Jim DeMint, Lindsey Graham and Rep. Henry Brown. I've put 7 images from this small effort online as a flickr photostream. http://www.flickr.com/photos/36975767@N07/sets/72157620726662313/
Here is the text of the cover letter that was delivered with the 2400 names. A much larger petition/canvass effort by Organizing for America is planned for the next several weeks. I'll post details on that effort here when they are available. After making the delivery, the group enjoyed a casual lunch at the Noisy Oyster. Before we left the building, we saw President Obama on the wall, a reminder that we do have someone working for us in the US Government. |

Re: Stand With Dr. Dean, Public Option Petition for Healthcare Dear Rep. Brown, Sen. DeMint & Sen. Graham, Please find enclosed a petition signed electronically by people across the state of South Carolina who support a public option for health care. I have reviewed the outlines of your plan and do not believe it provides the options working people in America need to make sure they and their children have access to healthcare. As a family law attorney, I see family after family losing access to medical treatment. The government program for children has been a great help. I’ve been signing my clients children up for that program as they lose their jobs and benefits for several months. However, often the parents have no coverage at all. I currently have couples in my family law practice who have been separated for years, now living with other people in an intimate relationship, who remain married to their wife of husband merely to maintain access to health insurance coverage without pre existing condition problems. This makes a mockery of the institution of marriage and the “family values” allegedly so large a part of life in SC. I hope you will note how many of these names come from “conservative” communities like Mt. Pleasant, Lexington and Greenville. Our state’s disintegrating middle class and working class economy is revealing a growing number of South Carolinians who can no longer afford to pretend they support your conservative policies. As their Senator, you need to listen to them and the real needs of real people. This is a small petition, largely gathered through an internet effort. A much larger, door to door canvas will be launched by Organizing for America, the President’s grass roots mobilization campaign next week. I hope to help bring you a much larger petition with far more names at the end of that effort in a few weeks. Thank you for your time and attention. Yours very truly, William Hamilton cc.
