Q4 Fundraising Roundup: SC Governor's Race (Dem Edition)

    by: Jennifer Read

Fri Jan 15, 2010 at 17:34:12 PM EST

State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex finally turned in his campaign disclosure report today and let's just say, it's not good news for South Carolina's only statewide-elected Democrat. Rex had the dubious distinction of being the only Democratic gubernatorial candidate to spend more money than he brought in, finishing last place behind Senator Robert Ford in total cash on hand. Below is a full rundown on the Democratic candidates' fourth quarter fundraising efforts.

    Vincent Sheheen:
    Contributions: $222,673
    Expenditures: $100,919
    Cash on Hand: $749,029
    Burn Rate: 45%

The State Senator from Camden was the first Democrat to jump into the 2010 field, giving him an early advantage in the money race. Sheheen's first staff hire was Dem Money Honey Ashley Medbery, who quickly made fundraising the campaign's top priority. In the fourth quarter, the campaign began investing in outside help, spending $10k on the fundraising firm Blanton & Associates and $16k on marketing with BANCO/Bannister Company. Now eleven months since launching his exploratory committee, Team Sheheen has consistently finished first in the Democratic money race each quarter and enjoys the largest campaign war chest heading into this spring's crowded primary.

Sheheen Campaign Nears the $1 Million Mark

    by: Jennifer Read

Mon Jan 11, 2010 at 13:54:21 PM EST

State Senator Vincent Sheheen (D-Camden) announced today that his team raised over $222,672 last quarter, bringing the campaign's total for the election cycle to over $958,000.

According to a release from the campaign, the Sheheen Team also met its goal of reaching 2,010 contributors by 2010.

"It is incredible to think that 2,010 people have joined our effort to restore leadership and civility at the state house," said Sen. Sheheen. "Our campaign is about people, and the amount of money we have raised coupled with the number of donors shows that South Carolinians are ready for a leader who has a plan for responsible government that will help to grow jobs in our state."

This is the fourth consecutive quarter the Sheheen for Governor campaign has raised over $220,000 -- a sign the Camden Democrat will be a financial force to reckon with in this year's crowded blue primary.

Holleman Raises $211K in Superintendent of Education Race

    by: Jennifer Read

Thu Jan 07, 2010 at 16:20:31 PM EST

Frank Holleman knows how to raise some cash.

The Democratic candidate for Superintendent of Education raked in an impressive $211,465 during the final quarter of 2009, leaving Holleman with a hefty $173,435 war chest moving forward.

A former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education and current Greenville attorney, Holleman's list of contributors is heavy on Upstate donors and legal professionals. More important, though, is where Holleman chose to spend his money. The Democrat invested heavily in fundraising and marketing infrastructure to lay the groundwork for his early fundraising success. Included in his expenditures:

    • $14,101 on the Rackes Group -- a S.C. based e-marketing, webdesign and media consulting firm (the same firm used by current Supt of Education Jim Rex); and
    • $10,000 on the Fundraising Management Group in D.C.

Holleman's early show of strength and modest burn rate (about 21% to date) is a great sign for SC Democrats hoping to retain the seat this November.

In contrast to Holleman, Republican Brent Nelson raised only $3,085 this quarter and $21,772 to date. Six months out from a three-way GOP primary, the Furman University professor has only $1,258 on hand and a loan balance of $4,500 moving forward. Nelson's two competitors, Newberry College President Mick Zais and Dutch Fork High School teacher Kelly Payne have yet to file their fourth quarter disclosure reports with the SC State Ethics Commission.

UPDATED: Rob Miller Raises $1 Million in 48 Hours

    by: Jennifer Read

Fri Sep 11, 2009 at 13:14:31 PM EDT

Joe Wilson's Democratic challenger has now surpassed the three-quarters of a million dollars mark. As of noon today this evening, Rob Miller has raked in over $775,000 $1,000,000 in campaign contributions and picked up more than 21,000 25,000 new donors since Wilson's "You Lie!" outburst Wednesday night.

    And he's not done yet.

Rob Miller Raises over $500K Online; Joe Wilson Counters

    by: Jennifer Read

Thu Sep 10, 2009 at 18:48:59 PM EDT

Rob Miller’s team has to be loving life today.

Thanks to his opponent Joe Wilson’s now infamous “You lie!” outburst during the President’s congressional address last night, the Beaufort Democrat has raised more than HALF A MILLION DOLLARS online in less than 24 hours.

That’s a lot of dough, people -- especially for the usually low-profile Second District race, which CQ Politics currently rates “Leans Republican.”

It’s also a vast improvement over Miller’s second quarter cash on hand total of just $48,974 and is likely to make Rep. Wilson ($211,604 COH) begin to sweat his 2010 rematch.

Thus far, the bulk of Miller’s mounting e-donations have come courtesy of Daily Kos, which put out multiple calls for Netroots supporters to contribute to Wilson’s Dem challenger on ActBlue. As of 6 p.m. today, Miller has amassed a gobsmacking 13,000 contributors from across the country.

So how are Joe Wilson and SC Republicans responding to this blue tidal wave of donations now pouring into Rob Miller’s campaign war chest?

This afternoon SC GOP consulting firm Richard Quinn and Associates (RQA), which represents the Congressman, launched an “I’m With Joe Wilson” t-shirt campaign and began pushing a “Back Joe Wilson” fundraising effort on Twitter and via email. Similarly, fellow RQA client Lindsey Graham told Fox News today he’d work to make sure that Wilson was re-elected next year, implying that the U.S. Senator would be willing to dole out some of his $2.7 million in campaign funds to aid his old friend. Not too shabby. (Update: Wilson also has hired GOP new media guru David All to handle his online crisis PR.)

On the national front, Fox New’s Sean Hannity has launched his own fundraising drive to help Wilson continue his fight against evil “Obamacare.” Redstate also is calling on the Rightroots to defend the GOP incumbent against the onslaught of shifty liberals hellbent on "destroy[ing] Joe Wilson." Um, okay…

Anyway, looking forward at the SC-02 race, two questions spring to mind: one, how much will this new infusion of cash help Rob Miller close in on Joe Wilson in 2010? Second, given the national prominence this race has received in the last 24 hours, will more Democratic or Republican challengers emerge to take on Wilson next year?

    Thoughts?

Sheheen Surpasses Half Million Dollar Mark in Fundraising

    by: Jennifer Read

Thu Jul 09, 2009 at 14:43:04 PM EDT

The Sheheen campaign has just released its quarterly fundraising numbers and they're pretty impressive.

State Senator Vincent Sheheen today announced that he has raised over $500,000 thus far for his expected gubernatorial campaign. According to the campaign, Sheheen raised approximately $225,000 during the last quarter, bringing his five-month fundraising total to just over $502,000.

"I am humbled by the encouragement and outpouring of support I have received over the last five months," said Sheheen.  "As I have traveled our state in recent months talking to our citizens, I have become excited by how many share the vision of a South Carolina with the best public schools, a thriving economy, and a state government that works for all its citizens. I am strengthened by the knowledge that even in these difficult economic times, hundreds of hard-working people across this state have stepped forward to lend their voices and their financial support to my campaign."

The campaign says it's received contributions from 970 individuals statewide and now has $460,000 COH.

McLeod Raises Over $165,000 for SC Governor's Race

    by: Jennifer Read

Thu Jul 09, 2009 at 13:59:54 PM EDT

Friday is the deadline for candidates to file their quarterly fundraising reports, and the numbers are beginning to trickle in across the state. First out of the gate among the S.C. Democratic gubernatorial candidates is newcomer Mullins McLeod, who is reporting that his campaign raised $165,345 in just over five weeks.

"I'm honored that so many South Carolinians have joined our campaign for change. The political insiders and Columbia politicians have been opposed to this campaign since day one, because they know I'll shake up politics as usual and focus on what matters most - creating jobs," said McLeod.

According to his disclosure report, McLeod has raised $168,845 to date and spent just over $13,280, leaving the Charleston attorney and small businessman with $155,564 COH moving forward.

It's a strong start for the McLeod team. As for his primary challenger state Sen. Vincent Sheheen, the Sheheen team reported $271,362 COH as of April 10, 2009. We'll bring you more numbers as they come in.

CCP: DeMint Assaults Big Business... After Taking Their Money

    by: Snead

Wed Apr 29, 2009 at 13:01:53 PM EDT

CNN's Rick Sanchez isn't the only reporter calling out South Carolina's Sen. Jim DeMint for his political double speak. Greg Hambrick at the Charleston City Paper has a quick look at DeMint's hollow attacks on "big business":

Sen. Jim DeMint does not like big business. The picture he paints in today's Washington Times would make you think that the feeling is mutual, but no sir. Nearly $275,000 in first quarter campaign donations from big business political action committees suggest that DeMint has got more friends than he's willing to admit.

The column in the Times is in response to the national Chamber of Commerce, which gave DeMint and others low marks for opposing the federal stimulus. DeMint calls the chamber members the "corporate elite" and says that he's not their stooge.

The road back to Republican success is not to reinforce our weakened coalition of corporate interests, but to drop it altogether. Republicans shouldn't be the party of business any more than they should be the party of labor - we're supposed to be the party of freedom.

That's a costly proposition, particularly for DeMint. Tons of big businesses have donated to his reelection campaign, particularly in this first quarter of the year. There were $1,000 contributions from political action committees at AFLAC, Allstate, Bayer, Coke, Chevron, G.E., and McDonald's. Larger contributions included PAC money from Sprint Nextel ($1,500), Campbell Soup ($2,000), R.J. Reynolds ($2,500), and Cisco Systems ($3,000)...

    Trick or Tweet

    by: Atlas

Mon Mar 23, 2009 at 11:48:22 AM EDT

There are plenty of politial people who have no problem assuming the position if that position nets a profit and minimal rug burn. Politricking is an art, and with the Republicans' newfound love of technology, Sen. Jim DeMint has a new trick: tweeting for cash on Twitter:

Urgent need: Twitter friends - I really need your help with reelection. Will you please donate $20 or $10 today?  http://tinyurl.com/d5rbjf

For the bottom basement price of $10 or $20 you can become a member of Club 2010. I thought you had to charge more than that to sell out and sell yourself to monied interests, but this is a troubled economy. For these low, low prices, you can also become an exclusive member of  Club 2010, which is not to be confused with something hip and cool and associated with young people.

DeMint also seems to have a bit of dementia, because he actually thinks he's important:

Until now, I’ve devoted my full time and attention to leading this conservative fight in the Senate…and that’s how I want it to stay. But as I face re-election in 2010, Democrats and their liberal allies will do their best to distract me from the real fight by spending untold amounts of time and money to defeat me.

    The Sisyphean tragedy continues:

You’ve stood beside me before and now I need your help more than ever. I need the resources to combat these Democratic attacks so that I can focus on continuing the battle to change Washington.

So, the Democrats are forcing him to beg for small sums of cash. Now, others (like him, and him, and her) are begging for him, but I don't think they've actually given up the goods like he has. At least not yet. And, if I didn't know better, I would think that T-Rav designed the Congressman's website since the first thing you see is a giant bong. I'm sure in between hits (on the website!) he and DeMinted foment opposition to President Obama's version of stimulus.

In the end, the bong is less than half full, kinda like DeMint's brain. I'm not sure how many of his Twitter friends will donate, but I'm sure at least a few twits will.
