Edited, February 15 to reflect new bill proposing to repeal this law. Earlier this week the realization erupted that the State of South Carolina had a program and legal requirement for subversive organizations to file a registration form with the SC Secretary of State’s Office. This little tidbit was picked up by the Huffington Post and made the rounds on Twitter and facebook. It telegraphed through the right wing videoverse on YouTube. Since it fits in well with the South Carolina as running national joke storyline that our elected leaders regularly sustain with trips to Argentina and plans to starve stray school children, it transmitted well through the blogosphere. See the Huffington Post note here.
I called the SC Secretary of State’s office to find out what was going on. The clerk I spoke to had never heard of the form in question, though she found a PDF of it on the office’s server. She pulled it up and admitted she had never saeen it before. See the form here. I asked them to call back when they got to the bottom of it. READ THE EXTENDED TEXT BELOW TO SEE IF YOU NEED TO FILE

Signaling that she has every intention of running as Mark Sanford in a dress - without all the, you know, skirt chasing - Nikki Haley headlined the big teabag event at the State House on July 4. Maybe that's not so surprising. But what caught my eye was some of the stuff talked about at the rally and that Haley apparently made no effort to contradict it. It seems one of the big issues oppressing the teabaggers is public education - specifically, that whole "public" part of it: About 1,500 people showed up at the Capitol for the four-hour, issue-oriented rally on a hot July Fourth holiday, where everything from the fair tax to the abolition of all public schools [emphasis mine] and a return to a gold-standard currency was pushed.
As my four-year-old has become fond of saying these last few days, "Say what, say whaaaa?" Does Nikki Haley support this radical agenda, and, if not, did she stand up to oppose it? Here's the extent of Haley's position of education from her campaign website: “We are fortunate in Lexington to have educators and parents who work hard to make our schools among the best in the country. As a mother of children in public school, I believe that’s an effort we should all be proud of – and it’s also why I fight so hard to make sure our schools get the resources needed for success. But not all of South Carolina’s children are as fortunate as ours. We must do more to help these struggling schools. We must demand greater accountability, increase educational options, and recruit the best and brightest teachers so that all of South Carolina’s children have an education that prepares them for a lifetime of success.”
Haley was a sponsor of the latest voucher bill, and, of course, was a strong - if belated - supporter of the Undone Gov's effort to gut education by refusing stimulus funds. So is Haley another in a long line of Republican candidates who will profess to support public schools while acting to undermine them? Or does she support the teabag agenda to abolish public education altogether?

Where, you may ask, are the Iranians standing up to government repression drawing their inspiration? Ladies and gentlemen, we need look no further than the brave patriots standing up to the oppressive regime right here in America - the teabaggers.
